Make Your Dream Fashion Career a Reality

Even if you have no prior industry experience, a network and connections or a fashion school degree.

I learned a lot about the industry from my conversations with Maria, such as teaching me how to better find the internship I want and plan for my future career and giving me a lot of resources. She is not only a good mentor, but more like a good friend. I am grateful for the advice she provided for me.

SAY YES! IF YOU'VE FELT THIS BEFORE:

You dream of starting a career in fashion, but don't know where to start.

You're tired of applying to job after job and not getting anywhere.

You've tried other courses that promise you the world, but have minimal hands-on support and just fill you up with templates.

You can't seem to find fashion opportunities that pay. Everyone just wants to hire volunteers or interns for free.

You feel like you're on your own in this process of starting or furthering your fashion career; no one around you understands.

Trust me, I get it.

I know what it's like to have ZERO industry connections and feel

like you're stuck working free job after free job with no opportunities in sight.

Growing up, I didn't always have a voice...but my clothes did.

Whether it was the clothes I was making for my Barbie dolls at age 5 or the ones I was selling to customers at my first retail job at 15, I knew that what you wore told an important story. As a kid, I was anxious and introverted (I still am!), but I loved making things beautiful and making people feel beautiful, too. I didn't know it then, but even at age 5, I had already chosen my career in fashion.

I couldn't afford to have unpaid internships in school, I had to work.

While my classmates were interning at these giant fashion houses for free, I had to work my full time job in order to pay for school, books, transportation, etc. etc. Homework was done on my commute (it was a 1 hour train ride each way) and every single weekend was spent working in order to meet my 40-hour per week full time status.

I graduated college during one of the worst financial crises this country had ever seen...

Needless to say, no one was hiring. We were handed our diplomas and a reminder that our student loans were due the next day. On top of that, I was laid off from my job due to the failing economy. It was the first time in a long time where I found myself with absolutely nothing to do. After spending the last 4 years running around working and studying, I felt like a FAILURE.

I started volunteering at fashion shows to learn as much as I could.

Even though these shows didn't pay me anything, I knew the knowledge and hands-on experience I could gain from just being there was invaluable. No matter the show or the task, I did it all as if it was my full time job; soaking in as much information as possible while doing the best work I could do. I did this for TEN YEARS on and off as I continued to grow my career.

I took every opportunity that came my way and just said YES.

YES TO LEARNING.

YES TO GROWING.

YES TO EXPERIENCING.

YES TO LEARNING.

YES TO GROWING.

YES TO EXPERIENCING.

And I discovered...

Opportunities don't just fall into your lap. You have to go out, find them and make them happen. You have to envision yourself doing what you always dreamed of doing and then fighting like hell to make that dream a reality.

PSST...WANNA KNOW A SECRET

PSST...WANT TO KNOW A SECRET

The reason I was able to start volunteering backstage at NY Fashion Week? I overheard 2 students talking about a professor who allowed her students to be on her volunteer team. Apparently she had a strict policy about only having her students on this list. I obviously wasn't in her class, but I knew I had to be on that volunteer list.

So, I pretended to be in her class, told the girls I had lost her email address and could they give it to me? They did!

That same day, I emailed the professor in my most professional manner asking if I could work backstage with her even though I wasn't in her class. She got back to me that night, praised me for my professionalism and officially confirmed I was on the volunteer list!

The very next day, I was working backstage at my first ever New York Fashion Week show: Oscar de la Renta.

Eighteen years and 35 seasons later, I still get an adrenaline rush working backstage at Fashion Week. Only now, instead of dressing models, I produce the shows.
